Grace Holistic Center for Education wins 2024 Path to Zero: Water Award for Student’s Sustainability Class Project on Water Conservation

Updated: Sep 26

In honor of World Water Monitoring Day (September 18th), Grace Holistic Center for Education (GHCFE) is pleased to share our student’s capstone sustainability project, earning them an Illinois Green School award for the second consecutive year. The Illinois Green Schools Project is a year-long sustainability challenge designed for K-12 schools, a program developed by the US Department of Education. The Green Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools, districts and higher education institutions with active programs, actions, and dedication to sustainability. Working in partnership, the Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Illinois Green Alliance administer this program at the state level.

All participating schools are judged by their progress in the following areas: 1) reducing environmental impacts; 2) improving health and wellness; and 3) offering effective environmental and sustainability education.

GHCFE’s entire student body participated in this Sustainability Class project focused on water conservation and waste reduction. Students across every grade level engaged in diverse water sustainability lessons covering history, infrastructure, pollution, supply and demand and more. To apply the principles they learned and reduce the school’s water and plastic waste, they conducted a school-wide water usage audit and found that the school used 1,894 gallons of water per week. Students then identified and assisted with the repair of a sink leak and the installation of a water bottle filling station and expanded their work to the broader community by conducting water audits with their families at home.

You can view the details of their award-winning water conservation project below.

GHCFE is happy to share their student’s sustainability project in honor of World Water Monitoring Day.  This International Day of Awareness was established in 2003 to bring attention to the importance of water quality, conservation, and protection of our global water resources.
